Authors of verses          

    Greek canons of the praises for May were written by various authors of the VIII-IX centuries among which are Ioann Damaskin (died in 749/776), Pheophan Ispovednik (died in 850), Iosiph Pesnopisets (died in 883/886), Guerman, Patriarch Koptsky (713-740); possibly Georgy Nikomedysky (IX cent.), monk Kosmoy, monk Mayumsky (XIII? cent.), Lev Despot and Tarasy. The authors of some canons are not established and the researchers divide as to the authorship of others [Menaion (Greek) 1899; Sergy 3, 160-204; Philaret 1864; Philaret 1996; Nechunayeva 2000, 62-64; Shchegoleva 2001, 490-491].

    The authors of irmoses which beginnings are given before the canon songs are Ioann Damaskin, Andrey Kritsky, monk Kosma, Patriarch Guerman, Stephan Kritsky and Patriarch Ylya [Shchegoleva 2001, 12-13, 444-471].
